Music and Dance

Our curriculum at Chatten Free School is highly individualised for every pupil and music is integrated across the curriculum to give pupils a wide range of musical experiences. Examples of this include:

  • Dance sessions
  • Music therapy sessions
  • Accessing our specialist sensory and VR rooms which have a wide range of songs and musical experiences
  • Soundboard sessions
  • Sound work during Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language sessions
  • Learning to play simple musical instruments through imitation or as a leisure skill
  • Singing songs during small group sessions such as bucket time and social engagement groups
  • Special events, such as our annual music festival (Chattenbury)
Music Therapy

We commission our music therapy sessions through Suffolk Music Therapy Services. We have a referral system for pupils who will benefit most from the sessions. These may take place in 1:1 or small group sessions, depending on the pupil's needs and the reason for referral. Some of the reasons that pupils may benefit from music therapy sessions include, but are not limited to:

  • Pupils who are finding it challenging to engage in the curriculum
  • Pupils who have recently moved into care
  • Pupils who may be exhibiting signs of trauma or other mental health difficulties
  • Pupils who may benefit from taking part in a specialist small group
Dance

We commission dance sessions through Step into Dance, who provide inclusive dance sessions for secondary and sixth form pupils. All pupils in years 7-14 are offered the chance to access dance in small groups or 1:1 sessions. Additionally, some primary pupils access dance sessions taught by experienced in-house staff.
